Once again the sales for recreational vehicles are up, and it finally seems that even the younger generation is getting onboard..
This above is off course in the US, where the RV market is huge, but even here in Australia the trend and sales are increasing thanks to the price of real estate quickly getting out of hand.. At this rate, of increasing costs, it will take 35 years just to repay the average mortgage.. Who wants to be a bank slave for that long???
So few people have started to look for smarter alternative.. Sales of containers are also up, as more and more people realise the simplicity and advantages compare to a rural shed.. And some don’t look that shabby either… I have also seen people stacking them up and making a two storey houses out of it, even in expensive suburbs in Brisbane.. If you think about it, that way you have the best of both, location and affordable housing.. I’m sure that not everybody wants or have the possibility and/or capabilities of living in 35 square metre. But for the new generation that doesn’t have 50 years of crap and furniture sitting everywhere collecting dust, it may be just what the doctor ordered..
Last month I was finally able to find a few new videos of young Australians couple making the jump and converting buses to motorhome. You can see the video in the Inspirational Page, right at the bottom of it.. Perhaps not your everyday conversion, but if it works for them, that it is all it matters in the end..
Some statistics from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia even if from 2019, seems to confirm this upward trends.. While the numbers for 2020 have not being released, RV retailer seem to be very happy around the country and a quick search online does shows you new RV products coming out every day..
I’m particularly impressed with this chart where it clearly shows a massive spike in sales of motorhomes, after a pretty ugly time around 2013. Caravan seems to go down but just a bit..
Australian Motor vehicle census also does confirm that in 2020 sales were up 3.5% for “Campervan” alone.. I wouldn’t be surprise if the “Campervan” category does actually include the entire RV family..
This is indeed a great news, as the more people take the road, the more infrastructure will be needed to cater for the continuous increasing number.. And it is not just the conventional RV industry that has been paid attention to this upward trend, but even some electric vehicle manufactures are starting to make the change for the future of RV..
In 2018 the electric Winnebago became a reality, followed in 2019 by another German manufacturer selling the more conventional size of RV.. And once the technology gets there, even upgrading an old diesel bus, to electrical will not be a problem.. Like some companies are already selling kits to convert motorcycle, it won’t be long, before some other companies see the possibilities.. It could be a win win situation..
Imagine a young family living in an 100% electric RV where most of the power does come from the roof where there is plenty of space for solar panels. Imagine they don’t need to drive a couple of hours every day just to get to work and back, because of the possibility of choosing a location where they could park near work.. Also, Covid has moved lots of people out of their office last year, and they are now comfortably working from home, making the same money but with much less expenses, so an RV would make even more sense now that they are not stuck in one place because of their jobs..
It seems that everybody could benefit from this trend, including the environment…
