Another month has pass but I can clearly see the finish line now!

Since the dining table was complete and installed, Gigi has formally reached the stage where it can be truly called a Motorhome. The table is made of 3 plank 25 mm thick hardwood biscuit joined together. Then 5 coats of Tung oil were applied to finish the top of it. It needed two gas strut to be supported as it is over 30kg in weight.

If you read my previous log, I did mention tossing between hardwood or custom made resin. The resin would have given me more choice of shapes and looks, but in all honestly I didn’t have either the time or the inclination of playing with the resin. I also did not have a perfectly clean place where let the resin sit to dry. I also do not have all the extra stuff required for the final polishing of the resin.

Last but not least, the table sits right under the window and I’m not sure of how well these new UV resin do actually perform under the Australian sun. As you can see, hardwood was a much easier, simpler choice, and the end result is not too shabby either, I may add.. 😎  Perhaps a bit of an overkill, but I love it! It is big enough to fit 4 comfortably and it goes down to become another large single bed, making the 5th bed matching the 5 seats to comply with the law.

Because the seats have plenty of room under, I was also able to get a shoe storage box built in. I also needed a place where to mount the front door switches, so combining the two together was the easy solution. Having all the shoes available at the front it also means that the floor should stay cleaner for longer.. To avoid unpleasant odour inside the shoes box I also installed a grille on the side to allow air to circulate. It had to be blue to go with the seat!

The onion’s storage cabinet also got given an improvement by a mean of a nice front grille, once again to allow air to circulate properly. I originally only had holes in the back, but once the cabinet was closed there was no really a way for the air to get in. The microwave too, has received two new grille to further facilitate the expulsion of hot air from the top. It didn’t really need it, but I found the grille in the pile of alloy outside, so I felt the need to recycle. Perhaps I just made it easier for bugs to get in.. 😁

While the microwave was out I also managed to replace all the original power cords, with side entry HPM plugs. Back in the old days, most kitchen appliances did come with side entry plug to put less strain on the cable being always plugged in the same position. It also diminishes the change for the plug to come out due to vibrations while driving. Another good reason to have side entry plugs is that they do take 5 cm less space behind the appliance. In my case the back of the microwave was nearly touching the cable coming out of the plug. I don’t need to tell you how hot the back plate of the microwave does get. So the side entry plug fixed that problem as well..

Now that the floor was finish, I managed to install for the entire perimeter of the motorhome a nice 70 mm high skirting board in finger joined pine. None of that MDF crap around here! Good thing about the new finger joined pine is that the join is hidden properly on the front, so it can be use in situations like mine where I only used varnish and not paint to protect the timber..
