Smoking Pipes Store – A Good Business like they all should be…

Once in a while and not very often, I do stumble across what I like to call “A Good Business”.

A good business is practically what most small business used to be before all those giant corporation decided to kill individuality and make pretty much every business on the planet sell the same cheap items and concentrate on quantity instead of quality combined with a complete lack of individual customer care…

A few weeks back, while browsing on Ebay for a gift, I found myself looking at “Smoking Pipes Store” and I really did enjoy and liked what it was on offer. Vitaliy (the owner) does have an excellent range of handmade products at a very competitive prices…

I was actually looking for a small but good quality backgammon board game… It seem that Vitaliy does have small, medium and large board games on offer, so to cover pretty much any possible customer need…

Now the actual business is based in Ukraine, in Kiev and like most of Eastern Europe, I honestly believe that they still base quality in life ahead of quantity…

So without hesitation, after going through the massive choice of board and material design, I did purchase a small board.  After 19 days I received a parcel in the mail with 34 (yes 34) stamps cover nearly the entire side of the box.. It made feel right at home just looking at all those stamp because in Italy we do the same..

The board game was exceptionally well protected with several layer of packaging material and it did took a while to break in, but eventually I got to admire first hand an incredible exquisite craftsmanship, that I kind of forgotten did exist… Well definitely not at those prices anyway…

The picture on the left was taken from the Ebay site and believe me, it does no justice what so ever to the actual board game. You really can’t see the quality of the leather, the crispness of the drawing or the finishing of the wood…

It is just brilliant the way those simple material are put together to bring you a gorgeous boar game, without being arrogant or pretentious.. It makes you feel good just being able to hold such an object, as you can feel the warmth of the person that did put it together..

It is a feeling hard to explain in words, but it gave me a remembrance of when we use to get together as young kids after a day of work, in the local tavern in the hills, while eating bread with salame and a good bottle of red vine, we use to play backgammon until the early hours of the night.. Possibly, some of the best times in my life…

Inside the package there was also a folded paper.. A beautiful note from Vitaliy confirming his pleasure to entrust his board game in my care.. This is when you start to realise that the man is also proud of his creation, and why wouldn’t he? It’s beautiful…

The note also did beard his hand written signature, another gesture of respect long lost in this computer and mobile phone age ..

And then a little souvenir feel out of the folded paper..

It was a 1 Hryvnia bank note, just as token of gratitude for my patronage..

At this point I had to stop and wonder why the world has changed so much.. Does this form of business transaction, where two human being can interact in such a lovely and pleasant manners really has to disappear?  Ask yourself this… When was the last time that you did purchase something from somebody on the opposite side of the planet at a very good honest price, where you received the item in perfect order and of top quality, with a signed note of trust and a real gift?

This is only the third time in 50+ years that it has happen to me, so forgive me if I got a bit sentimental about it, but I’m going to send a thank you note to Vitaliy and not for the board or the folded note and not even for the souvenir…

I just want to say thank you Vitaliy for remind me that there are still good simple honest enjoyable people out there…

I could have obviously gone for the Chinese plastic version of this board game, but if I did, this blog wouldn’t exist…
